More and more celebrities were influencing spectacle fashion.  For example, in the 1970s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis helped to popularize oversized lenses.

By the 1980s technical innovations had produced higher quality, plastic lenses. These were lighter and safer to wear.

This oversized frame shape is characteristic of the late 1980s/early 90’s, and came in a variety of bright colours and patterns.
