Ortho-K Contact Lenses

At Dipple & Conway, we’re always looking to bring our patients the very best in eye care innovation. Orthokeratology, more commonly known as Ortho-K, is one of the most exciting developments in vision correction, offering a safe and effective alternative to glasses, daytime contact lenses, and even laser eye surgery.

While Ortho-K is widely used in parts of Europe and the United States, it is still considered a specialist treatment in the UK. Very few practices in Norfolk provide it, which is why we are proud to make this option available for our clients. Ortho-K can be life-changing for both adults and children, particularly those with mild to moderate myopia (short-sightedness), active lifestyles, or families looking for proven ways to slow the progression of myopia in children.

What Is Ortho-K?

Ortho-K lenses are custom-designed, gas-permeable contact lenses worn overnight. As you sleep, the lenses gently and temporarily reshape the cornea,( the clear front surface of the eye) to correct myopia

In the morning, the lenses are removed, leaving you with clear vision throughout the day without the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses. The effect typically lasts for a full day, so for best results, Ortho-K lenses should be worn consistently every night.

Research also shows that Ortho-K can slow down the progression of myopia, making it an increasingly popular option for children and teenagers. For adults, it provides freedom from glasses and contact lenses during the day, which is particularly beneficial for sports, outdoor work, and anyone who simply prefers life without eyewear.

How Does Ortho-K Work?

The lenses apply precise, gentle hydostatic that temporarily flattens the central cornea. This change in shape moves epithelial cells (the thin outer layer of the cornea) from the centre towards the periphery, creating a smooth and corrected surface for light to focus properly on the retina.

The effect is completely reversible: if you stop wearing the lenses, the cornea naturally returns to its original shape within a few weeks Unlike laser surgery, there is no permanent alteration, making Ortho-K a safe and non-invasive option for those not ready to consider surgery.

Who Can Benefit from Ortho-K?

While Ortho-K is suitable for a wide range of people, it offers particular advantages for:

  • Children with progressing myopia - Studies show Ortho-K can slow the progression of myopia in children, reducing the risks of future eye health complications.
  • Adults with mild to moderate myopia - A convenient alternative to daytime correction, making daily life more comfortable.
  • Active individuals - Sports enthusiasts, swimmers, and outdoor workers enjoy clear vision without the inconvenience of glasses or daytime contact lenses.
  • People with dry eyes - For some, wearing lenses during the day can worsen dry eye symptoms. Because Ortho-K lenses are only worn overnight, this can provide welcome relief.
  • Those not ready for laser surgery - Ortho-K offers a reversible, non-surgical solution, giving patients a taste of life without glasses before committing to permanent procedures.

An assessment with one of our qualified Contact Lens Opticians is essential to determine suitability, as not everyone will fall within the prescription range for Ortho-K.This is typically  --  -1.00 to -4.50 with moderate astigmatism

What to Expect from the Fitting Process

Your Ortho-K journey begins with a comprehensive eye examination, including a detailed corneal topography. This advanced scan maps the surface of your eye with incredible precision, ensuring your lenses are designed specifically for your individual corneal shape.

If your prescription falls within the appropriate range, we will order your bespoke lenses. Once they arrive, you’ll return to the practice for a fitting appointment, where we’ll check the fit, teach you how to insert and remove the lenses, and guide you through lens care.

Regular follow-up appointments are arranged to monitor your progress, check your eye health, and make any necessary adjustments. This ensures that your treatment remains both effective and safe.,with a 6 month replacement period

Is Ortho-K Safe?

Yes. Ortho-K is a safe and well-established method of vision correction when prescribed and monitored by a qualified professional. The risks are lower to those associated with conventional contact lenses and are extremely low when good hygiene and care routines are followed.

To keep your eyes healthy and your vision sharp, it is important to:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before handling lenses.
  • Clean and disinfect lenses daily with the recommended solutions.
  • Attend regular check-ups with your Contact lens Optician
  • Avoid exposing your lenses to water.

At Dipple & Conway, we provide full support and ongoing aftercare for all Ortho-K patients. You’ll have the reassurance of knowing that our expert optometrists are on hand every step of the way.
