What is an Optos Scan?
An Optos scan, or Optos ultra-widefield (UWF™) retinal imaging, takes an image of the retina called an Optomap image. This can capture a 200° ultra-widefield image of the retina in a single shot, which is around 80% of your retinal surface. In comparison, traditional imaging methods typically only capture about 45°.
This non-invasive, painless scan helps detect signs of:
- Retinal detachments
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Hypertension-related changes
- Age-related macular degeneration
- And other retinal diseases
By viewing such a wide area, optometrists can identify subtle issues before symptoms arise.

What is an OCT Scan?
An OCT scan uses light waves to take high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the retina, revealing its different layers in extraordinary detail. It allows Optometrists to see below the surface of the retina, something that isn’t possible with standard imaging.
OCT is particularly effective at diagnosing and monitoring:
- Glaucoma
- Macular degeneration
- Diabetic macular oedema
- Vitreomacular traction
The scan is also quick, completely painless, and involves no contact with the eye.

Why an Optos and OCT scan combination matters
While both scans offer valuable insights individually, combining them gives us the most comprehensive assessment of your eye health:
- Optos gives us a wide-angle surface view of the retina
- OCT allows us to look deep beneath the surface, layer by layer
This dual approach can help us detect potential issues earlier, allowing us to better track progression and create personalised care plans. This dual-imaging approach is especially useful for those at higher risk, but it also benefits anyone wanting the most accurate and advanced eye test available, which we pride ourselves on here at Dipple & Conway.
Who should consider these scans?
While everyone can benefit from Optos and OCT scans, we strongly recommend them for:
- Adults ages 40+
- Anyone with a family history of eye disease
- Those with diabetes or high blood pressure
- Patients experiencing changes in vision or eye discomfort
Even if your vision feels fine, these scans can detect underlying issues long before symptoms become noticeable.
